What?s the significance of an engine that has been modified, bored out, I think the expression is, to increase horsepower. Does that automatically mean that fuel consumption is increased as well.

Are you wary of this kind of mod?

Any special precautions you?d take if buying a boat with this mod?

Re: Engine Boring Definition

Boring the cylinders out can be a reconditioning method to give new walls to worn or scored cylinders. This can be a very small increase and would not change performance measurably. It can also be done to increase the "bore" significantly to result in increased overall "displacement" which is the size of the void left in the cylinder when the piston is all of the way down, then times the number of cylinders. If you add a "stroked" crank you increase the displacement even more. Anytime you increase displacement, you also increase available air. More air equals more potential for more fuel which is potentially more power. This does not automatically mean worse or better fuel economy although typically, as you increase displacement, the engine must be throttled more (more of a closed throttle), so for the same load (your boat at a given speed) you have increased throttling losses and you should get worse fuel efficiency. This is theoretical, and seems bass ackwards, but it's accurate.

commonly done for engine freshening/rebuilding...

no....

yes...if it is done with more than .040 over bore just be it known that next time it needs rebuilt you;re going to need a block...most wont go .060 without issue...

what he said.. and add that the extra cubes for just boring an engine out to the max (anything over .040 on anything standard or typical oem block,e tc...) is not really worth the extra couple of cubes it gets you. The only real reason to do it in a standard build / rebuild is if you have scoring or pitting that won't come out with .030 or .040 overbore.

imho...

This boring was on a mercruiser 260. Now the current owner claims the engine makes 300 horses rather than the original 260.

I'm not sure whether that increase is within acceptable limits.

Simply boring it out will not accomplish that. Adding other things can... but if the engine was rebuilt by someone without knowing the basic needs and differences of automotive versus marine - then I would stay away from that. And if the owner cannot explain what else was done, then I would take most of what he says with a grain of salt. Let the buyer beware! ;)

That 350 engine does make more than 300hp stock, because the 260hp rating that you see is rated at the propshaft, not the crankshaft.

Ayuh,... As noted above,... The Boring of the block has to do with freshening the cylinder walls,...
Not making Horsepower...
A SBC gains about 6 cubic inches per .030 overbore... No Horsepower gains there...

I'd be more concerned about All the other Details of this Hi-performance rebuild than the Boring of the block...
