Re: Engine change , port charlotte/punta gorda

trying to put some plan together for a friend. He needs a new 305 in his 91, 24ft. chaparral cuddy cabin. Does not want to impose on anyone but the motor has to come out. Plan so far is to borrow a trailer from ARCADIA and trailer boat to PUNTA GORDA to another friends property where there is a barn/garage with utilities. Engine hoist is available but for cars/trucks. This is different. Have enough trouble getting people and equipment on the boat let alone crawling around swapping an engine.
Outdrive will fall right off as we have replaced it numerous times. The big concern is the corroded bolts that hold the bell housing to the transom adaptor. Big heavy ring with 6-8 bolts with corroded heads. Figure they will have to be drilled. Then a lift or chain fall to lift that baby out of the boat.
Friend is rightfully leary on turning the complete job over to someone as he has been burned so we are looking for someone reliable to assist in the swap. He works weekdays so it will be a weekend job. Will be using a new long block. I am retired so have plenty of time during the week, so can work weekdays. regards fred

I am a Real Estate agent, so I have "flexible" time during the week and would be willing to help if you would like. I enjoy the work and have done my share of engine swaps, etc. Just let me know if you are interested and let me know when. (And yes, I'm just talking about helping out - not looking for a "fee" :) ). I'm sure we can work out a time between appointments, etc. You can either respond here on this post, or email me.

You should only have to remove two bolts at the rear of the engine where the bellhousing mounts to the transom plate. These are the rear motor mount bolts. The bellhousing comes out with the engine assembly.

Another note; take pictures of hose routings, wires, and brackets. That will give you something to refrence when its time to put it back together.

FISHERMARK, thanks for your response. Got your e-mail address and will be in contact. Have to go north for a week but expect things to procede rapidally. Been thinking that a back hoe would have the clearance to lift the motor out. Reel Poor, are you sure the transom clamp ring does not have to come out to free the bell housing? regards fred

Kind of hard to say how to remove the engine without knowing what kind of engine and drive combination it is. Volvo? OMC? Mercruiser, what year????

Its a 91 Chaparral with a 5.0 L. I assumed it was a Mercruiser but I guess it could be a Cobra. This would still allow the bellhousing to be removed with the engine.

They are actually pretty easy to remove. Pull the upper gear box on the outdrive. Remove the 6 bolts around the ring. Remove the 4 lag bolts holding the front engine mounts to the stringers (No don't leave the mounts on the stinger, you will never get it back together without damaging something).
Then disconnect the water inlet hose, the electrical cable plug, battery cables, throttle cable, fuel line and lift it out. Hour to hour and a half max.

Don, sure appreciate the heads up on removing the fwd mounts. Plans are coming together nicely, my biggest concern are the 6 bolts on the ring. Afraid they will have to be drilled as heads are corroded. Question, have you ever used those fits all sockets advertised by SEARS? Looks like a socket full of roll pins that are supposed take the shape of the worn bolt head/nut. At least the boat will be out of the water on this job. thanks again FRED

Don't forget, on those 6 bolts there are SS locking tabs that have to be bent down. I have seen a lot of them that looked corroded that weren't. Just dirty and covered with crap.
I know that socket full of rods sounds great, but isn't worth the money for what you want. But if the bolt heads are corroded off, try these guys from Sears..... They really, really work.

http://www.sears.com/sr/javasr/product.do?BV_UseBVCookie=Yes&vertical=TOOL&pid=00952162000

DON, thanks for another heads up. Friend tried to put a socket on the bolts while we were changing the outdrive, I just glanced at them. Had no idea there were lock tabs there. Will clean off the barnicals with some acid and get a better look. Kind of looking forward to this job now. Will take a closer look at that SEARS product, worth having around saltwater equip. FRED

Ok, I just tried my link and it didn't work right. You can go to Homedepot.com and do a search for Gator and you'll find it.
