Engine Characteristics?

Well, I’m still searching for a boat! Thought I found a “deal” with a 150 Force and was going to purchase even after reading all the bad along with the good comments on Force engines, but the seller refused to allow a sea trial or even to start it with ears in the driveway. It wasn’t that good of a deal :( ! Found a boat with what I think are 1991 twin evinrude 100’s.
Model number E100WTLEIB serial #02598554, don’t have the second motors numbers.
Can anyone tell me anything about these motors? What are the engines characteristics? Searched the forum and from what I found they sound like a very solid engine, once again any help would be appreciated. I have to say that this is a great site and I was saved from making a huge mistake. I ordered a compression tester kit from Sears, I plan to check the compression and have a sea trial, don’t really want to spend $500 on a survey.
Thanks again

Mike

Re: Engine Characteristics?

These were very good motors. Sturdy and dependable. If they've been well maintained, they should be in very good shape for years to come. In the early '90's, the Coast Guard was disconnecting the VRO's and going to pre-mix because of the unreliability of the self-oilers. You may want to ask about this if there is someone available to answer. Make sure before you take off in it thinking the VRO is hooked up when it may not be.

Re: Engine Characteristics?

100 hp work motors were/are the 90 degree cross-flow models no longer made. Had V-6 gearcases if I'm not incorrect, for durability! I'd rather have bigger hp, BUT, the boat is what's HOT !!!! If it's a killer deal, buy the boat, scrap the motors!!! Do you have pictures?? If you don't get it, how about sharing the details/location ???????

Re: Engine Characteristics?

Well I’m fit to be tied. Called the boat broker half a dozen times today, he was always on the line and would return my call. Finally spoke to him at 3 in the afternoon, said that he just received a faxed contract    on the boat and the buyer from Wisconsin is to wire a deposit to hold the boat for a month so the guy can come to look at it. In all of the e-mails and phone conservations I had with this broker he never once suggested that I could do this. He said it is standard procedure and he thought I knew. Is this really standard when dealing with a broker  ? Well its back to the drawing board. Thanks again for the input, still good information for future reference.

Mike, still a boaterwantabee

Deposit, always...

When I sell a boat (private), I ask if the possible buyer is willing to leave a fully refundable deposit to hold it.. Kind of lets me know if their serious buyers or just tire kick'n joy riders..

Guy who leaves the deposit and if we agree on terms of the deposit, he gets first crack at it..

Seems the broker and the potintial buyer agreed on terms....

Live and learn.... Lots of boats out there...

Re: Engine Characteristics?

Snapperbait,

I was pretty steamed when I wrote the earler post. It's all a learning process,You are 100% correct the one who puts his money up first wins.
I was about 7 hours from the boat, the broker never offered to allow me to wire a deposit to him to hold the boat until I could see it. I offered a credit card deposit, which he refussed, I don't know why he didn't tell me well we wont accept a credit card deposit but you could wire the deposit. Like you said live and learn, I just wasn't aware of "the process" I don't fault them for taking the other persons deposit,(good for him bad for me) its entirely my fault as I should have asked more questions. I asked a ton about the boat and engines just not about the nuts and bolts of the actual buying process.
Alot can happen and it could fall back in my lap, if not, it wasnt meant to be. I'll just have to find another one. :) And with the season coming to an end there may be more to choose from!

Mike

Re: Engine Characteristics?

MichaelL
Great attitude for life in general and excellent for a buyer! But ofcourse never pass up a great deal!

I once saw a 29ft sloop list for 7000 (actually worth about 5000) in late summer. Sold in Oct for 1500! The buyer took one day to buy it and let it sit in his driveway until the next season (1994) washed it down and put in the local paper for 4995.00 it sold in two days!

Off season in our area can be a great time to buy a boat. We only have 90 days in season, with 60 of them being rain! :(

But thats not why I posted a reply: I would be very wary of a outfit that doesn't except credit cards! It tells me that they have no or worse bad credit. No commerical accounts! Bad start! Unless it was a cash and carry that you win on I'd leave them alone!

Link

Re: Engine Characteristics?

Hi All:

Wanted to let you know that yes loosing the formal Coast Guard Boston Whaler was just the right thing! Great boat but not set up for fishing.
Saw an ad about 11 pm on Wednesday with this description:

1986 Boston Whaler 25 Outrage, 25' Our Trade, Twin 1991 Evinrude 150's, New Furuno Radar, Garmin GPS, Interphase forward sounder, T-Top, Simrad Auto Pilot.

Called the broker in the morning, he faxed me a sale agreement and I drove 6 hours each way to put a deposit on it. As soon as I locate a trailer I will pick it up :D :D :D :D . Bigger boat than I was really looking for but at the price with all the goodies I couldn't pass it up and as I learned if you snooze you loose :) :) :) :)
Now that I will have a boat, need to change my handle
Thanks everyone for all your help, I searched the forums using the search feature and read many threads on many topics---engines--outboard or I/O, almost bought an I/O until saw all the problems in Salt water and need to winterize, problems associated with various outboard repair items etc. wealth of information from some very knowledgeable people.

thanks again. Will post photos in what boat do you own thread after I pick it up.
Mike
