Engine clearance

I'm retrofitting a sun deck to replace my doghouse, and wondering how little clearance above the engine is okay. Any suggestions?

The flame arrestor for my boat is leaving a mark on the foam under the cover. So, no clearance at all is provided. Air intake is going through the arrestor itself and it is provided to the engine compartment via the side vents.

I suggest at least a half an inch

Great. I have room for an inch or two above the spark arrestor, so I will call that sufficient. Thanks guys.
