i pulled my eng today it is a 120hp mercruiser. when checking out the coupler the splines looked great but the rubber around the center looked torn or pulled back a little, i have not smelled any rubber burning. the reason i pulled the eng is the boat would not go over 10mph so i thought the coupler splines would be stripped but that wasnt the case. i just put on a new prop last week and went back out and still had the problem. so here i am wondering if the coupler is bad. sure sounds like it could be the only problem but just not sure.

Make sure you realign it going back together....

Ayuh,....

Sometimes the actual Splines wear out, from a Lack of Grease,...
That usually takes out the drive's Input shaft with it....

More often,...
The little steel hub the splines are cut in, Rips out of it's rubber cocoon,...
That's caused by Bad Alignment,...

That's what Your's did,...
Before you put the motor back in,... Look around for Rotten Wood, or other reasons the motor Moved....

Then you'll need an Alignment Bar, to realign it...
ebay is a good resourse for it....
