I have a 1984 Mercruiser 140 serial number 6830530. I went DIW the other day. After doing some nebbing, I found the coupler and flywheel sitting dandily all alone within the bell housing. I pulled the engine today. It has the round coupler in it. The crankshaft does not have a locating dowel on it. The coupler and the flywheel attach to the crankshaft with studs. 4 of the studs were stripped out. 2 of the studs were sheared.
I have read that with this type of flywheel assembly there should be a locating dowel on the crank or the flywheel can bang between the studs until they fail. This seems to be what happened here.
I have several questions:
1.)what happened to my studs?
2.)is it possible somebody put the wrong coupler or rebuilt the engine on this boat and is supposed to have the triangular coupler setup?
3.)whats up with the whole locating dowel or not and does it really matter.
4.)how should i reassemble this thing properly?
i dont know if any of this matters but i have the starter with the offset bolts, one long one short. i didnt measure the flywheel its big im betting the 14 inch but not sure.
