I have a 1984 25' cuddy 350 engine 260 mercruiser. I've had to replace the engine coupler three times this summer. Alignment is perfect what else could possibly be causing this. I've noticed the shaft going into the coupler gets to hot to hold your hand on for more than a few seconds is this normal. Gimbal bearing seems to be ok. U joints and shaft look good. This coupler always spins in the center at the spline. Everyone I've talked to about this says the coupler is really strong so there must be some problem that no one is thinking of. I've had two different mercruiser techs put this in so I would think they are doing it right. Any ideas would be greatly appreciated.

Get a ice pick. Start probing around your transom and engine mount pads. Look for soft spots. Im thinking you got some rot and the engine is moving??

Re: engine coupler

The rear engine mounts may also be soft.

Re: engine coupler

It happened to me, engine was mounted into wooden mush, the engine was torque-rolling and making the coupler out of alignment. Get ready for $$$$, my job was $3,200 (that included an upper drive unit rebuild). Good luck.

Re: engine coupler

I would guess a "soft" transom that was flexing could also cause the same thing.

The mount is item 2 in the picture. There is one on each side.

Re: engine coupler

3 times this summer? Having the merc techs do this can get expensive. Almost the down payment on a new ride! But hey it's only money..sl
