engine cutoff at 2000 rpm

hello all, well first off, i have a 91 225 yamaha engine. I was out in rough water and all my buzzers and lights went off because of overheating. I had to drive home the whole time at low rpm. After some investigating i found water on the bottom of the oil tank, so it was mixing straight water instead of oil. Well, i bleed everything and got oil pumping again no buzzers go off and it revs fine in neutral. As soon as i go in gear it limits to 2000 rmp. Is there a reset for the cdi? I know there is a limiter but it wont go off and i know its not overheating. any suggestions would be great thanks

I can't tell what you're saying....first you say you had alarms due to overheating and had to come in that way...then you're in the oil tank and you 'know' it's not overheating....but as far as the 'reset' goes it should have done so with key off/key on....do you have any salt under cowling? Check your sender on engine tank and connections....

the engine buzzers went off because the motor was overheating, due to the fact oil was not being mixed with the gasoline. I had to motor home because it was to rough to anchor and wait. I found the oil problem and fixed that. Now the buzzers no longer go off and im not overheating but the rpm's are 2000 max.

The manual says once youve overheated the limiter wont go off. It will lock under 2000. Ive tried the turning the key on and off and disconnecting the batteries. Any other ideas.

First do a compression test to see if you have blown a head gasket or cylinder. Also checking for a shorted wire or temp sensor.
