Engine cuts out, 485 merc

1982 485, runs well, starts good hot or cold, but when i am in a confined area and need to manouver, after 2 or three gentle pumps on the throttle the engine cuts out, starts right away, but trying to get on:redface: on a swinging mooring with boats packed tightly and a very strong tidal current its S..yer pants scary!

Sounds like a lower shift cable needs replacement

Nope, not the cable, it does it when the remote arm is disengaged from the shift cables, almost like the accelerator pump is flooding the engine?
