Engine cuts out

Hi all,

I have a 1996 Maxum 1800 SR 3.0 Mercrusier.
I have just bought the boat and only had out a few times and have noticed this getting worse.
Engine starts up every time but when i engage into gear its ok until i give it a bit more throttle then cuts out. Sometimes it will get passed that sticky bit the pull up through the revs but then has a misfire then clears. Any Ideas? I have just changed the spark plugs and leads but no difference.

Check to see it the shift interrupt switch is being tripped.

Chris , I was just reading a post about the shift interrupt swtich . This switch is located next to the rocker cover? Good idea to check cables and the linkage ?

Depending on the shift system layout, it could be on the rocker cover. I would do a visual on the switch as you shift into gear and see if the switch arm is being moved. If it is, there's a problem in the shift system.

Ok so if it doesn't move then that means shift interrupt switch good and possibly look at carb issue ? Rebuild and tune up?

Correct. If it's not been done before, rebuild. I used to do the Weber on my 4.3LX every 5 or 6 years. Thankfully those days are well behind me with the MPI. 16 years old and the only thing I've had to do (apart from the normal oil and filter changes) is change the IAC muffler, one IAC valve and one set of spark plugs.
