Engine Damage - Help!

[Freezer]

I have a '99 Cobalt 190 with 5.0 GISX PWTR Volvo Penta engine (serial# 4110182291). I didn't winterize it properly and according the the marina have a frozen/busted engine. Was quoted $6000 for replacement by marina - ouch!!!! I simply can't afford to fix it right now and am looking for a way to 1) verify exactly what's damaged, and 2) find a less expensive way to get it fixed. I have a mechanic friend who owns a shop (race cars) and he said he can get me a new/reconditioned equivliant for $2700 with 18 month warranty - his/my cost. My question is, how can I test the engine to see what's really damaged (i.e. vacuum/pressure test?) to determine if it's the block, heads, exhaust manifolds, all of the above, etc? Also, can someone very good at race car engines likely handle yanking and installing a new marine engine in my boat? Thanks in advance for your guidance!

Jasper reman, $2400, 18 month, if you pull accessories, etc, and drive, $350 for pulling and dropping.
Do it yourself. Get your buddy to help, he tried to make beer money off you.

Sorry bout yer luck, You might try pullin the plugs an disconnect the battery so you can turn the motor over by hand. That ll get you movin in the right direction as to whether your motor is bad or not.

Do a search on here after you know a little more and the pros here will help

An auto mechanic can find his way around a motor an outdrive but bear in mind that Marine engines are Marine specific, electrical part mostly have to be Marine rated because of explosion hazard, yes EXPLOSION.

You also need a manual to get you through this, engine and outdrive, don t be afraid to spend the money on a good one.

There may be a lot of parts you can just transfer from your block to another block dependin on what froze or broke and what didn t
When your friend gets it out and apart, if thats the case, he ll find the insides are about the same as an automotive engine with some differences in cam and lifters and carb.

The Easy way is to Pull the motor,+ Look..... It'll be Painfully Obvious....

A race car mechanic should have no trouble pulling a marine engine and replacing it. As was noted, get a factory manual so you can see how things go together. You'll also need an engine alignment tool. You can pick one up on ebay. The hardest part is finding an engine hoist that can go high enough to clear the stern of the boat. I've pulled and stripped two marine engines by myself. Reinstalled one replacement with a helper and am almost ready to drop in a second one.
