Engine damage on new used boat

Good morning all. I have recently bought a cheap used Marlborough Dart with a Mariner E60 outboard. I have been spending the past few winter weekends getting the trailer to a registerable condition and have sanded back and rattled canned the top of the boat. Whe I had a close look at the engine, I noticed a fuel line connector had broken. It is shown in the attached pdf. I have not had a chance to remove the box and open it up to see what it is, but my question is can I bypass it and send the fuel directly from the filter to the engine?

No!! That "box" is the fuel pump. The engine will not run without it.

Thank you very much for both dwco5051 and jerryJerry05. The big question then that I have to figure out is if the fuel pump has no part number, can it be ordered or replaced? I have had real problems with finding the information about the motor. The best I can come up with is the early 80s, 60E (as stated in the post) made in Japan and prior to Mercury owning the Mariner brand. More research then. Cheers and good night.

Look up the serial # a dealer can help you. Mercury always owned Mariner.

If you can find the serial number look up 43113T fuel pump. That pump was used on lots of Mercs and Mariners around the age of yours. Many sites will tell you if it is the one for your motor if you have the year and/or the serial number. Will take a little computer time if there is not a dealer close to you. Not saying that is the one but it is a good place to start.
