Engine died and flywheel is frozen

I have a 15 hp 1994 mariner OB and recently it started to make quite a bit more noise (hard to describe) but was noticeable when in drive and at WOT was very loud and was not able to get to plane as power was just not there. Last night at WOT it died without any warning and I was not able to pull start it back as the flywheel would not budge. My oars got me home.
When I got home I took the flywheel assembly off and got the flywheel moving again and tried to start her but it froze up again.

Any ideas?

Right off the top of my head I'd say it went lean and burned up and warped something or lack of oil mix. Maybe a bad bearing. Take the spark plugs out and see if she turns ok. How much resistance?

Maybe you get off easy and it's only something loose from the rope start mechanism. Remove the rope start and check it.

I hate to say this "but it sounds like you had plenty of warning that something was not right with the engine."

It is a good practice to check into any unusual noise before your motor freezes up. I am leaning towards over heated. You might be able to free the flywheel for a bit, but making a full rev. on the engine is most likely not possible.

Well, the mix was correct at 50:1 and when I took out the plugs it still doesn't move past a certain point but does move the other way. Also when I put it in forward or reverse it seems to engage the prop fine.

Should I pull the flywheel? If so what should I look for once off? Or pull the lower unit? Or something else ?

Oh and to smarty pants..........thanks for reminding me of my faux pas on the "without any warning" part, I figured one of you guys would do that!

To Rear Admiral J Martin, I am not related to Mr Bustedagain and do not appreciate your innuendo that I am as it seems you and your buddy feel he is not worthy of asking for help. I think this was a good forum to be a part of as 99% of the members offer helpful advice to each other. Please don't pick apart every word but rather focus on the problems being reported and offer help rather then making people feel stupid. Not sure if this site is the right one for you? Please do not reply to my posts unless you are able to offer constructive advice. Thanks

Sounds like your motor had the same problem a little 2 horse Elgin I had when I was a kid. Running along one day about half throttle and the motor suddenly slowed down and slammed to a stop like you had hit the side of it with a hammer. Got real loud just before the fatal moment. Turned out to be a busted connecting rod. Motor would only rotate through a partial revolution back and forth like you are describing. But it was repaired and ran again.

mtierman, I can relate to J_Martin's response. It wasn't the smartest thing you did when you ran it WOT even though it was telling you that it was broke. Everybody knows you don't race a horse with a bum leg.

The result is that you've caused a severe internal engine problem that can only be diagnosed by tearing the engine down. The probability is that it will cost you more to repair it than to replace it.

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news... Next time, take a moment to listen to what your motor is telling you.

Well Mr Commander you were way off on your problem solving but did a good job like Mr Martin in telling me how stupid I am (you must be friends). Turns out Mr KC was right on with the connecting rod diagnosis.

$125 later and it is fixed and running fine!

Thanks for the helpful responses and I will "oh great ones" with those self proclaimed titles endeavor to do better in the future as I know you will be the first to remind me and other novice boaters of our ignorance and confuse it for stupidity and somehow feel like your helping. :D

You know these guys are giving free help and you are giving them a hard time in return.

Also, there are no self proclaimed titles. Those are forum ranks that relate to the number of posts a forum member has made.

The way I see it, when somebody comes here looking for a free hand they should be magnanimous enough to accept any playful criticism.

Well sir, I rarely do this, but I'm gonna have to call BS. You can't even buy a rod and bearings let alone the gaskets for 125.00 unless you used the old ones and in that case, good luck.

I agree with sschefer. The cheapest rod assembly I could find was over $150. Unless you did the repair yourself and didn't replace any bearings or seals, you'll be back for more abuse. I look at it this way, I'm married so there isn't anybody on here that can hurt my feelings.

O.K. enough of the P contest. Time will tell. He PM'd me and told me how he got the parts so cheap... Didn't all add up but he's the one who did the work so time will tell.

Anybody want to take point on helping him in the future... I'm rewiring my garage and building a new boat from plans. I think my schedule is pretty full up.

6ga. Is that one of those boat seat mounted shotguns Grandpa used to talk about? Why would you want it under the driveway?

Bout ready to depart. First mate is still getting dressed. Fishin' might be weird. It's foggy and breezy here at the same time. Don't care, at least there isn't a computer on board. (yet)
