Your battery cable got hot because of a poor connection either loose or dirty and corroded, probably both. This increased the resistance which created heat. That is why your terminal got hot. Fix it all up as has been suggested and then try again.

Rob, you've hit the nail on the head; resistance makes heat.

Ohm's Law dictates that the volts lost across a poor connection times the cranking current in amps equals the watts of heat generated at that point.

In defense of the binding post/wing nuts, I've been using them on my current boat since new in '84 with full success, BUT;
I tighten the wingnuts with a pair of pliers. And I keep it meticulously clean and coated with silicone grease.
