I was posting about 3 months ago about a alarm problem. Found that if I moved the oil pump wire from the post on the switch box and put it on another that the alarm stoped and worked properly. I figued that the the switchboz was going. Recently the alarm started sounding only at low rpms.

Re: engine dies help!!!!

Sorry I am not finished. that was a mistake...
So today I was out and the alarm sounded more often. The motor was not running hot and was smoking. On my way in the motor died, while running 4500. Went to try to start and did't turn over. About 4 mins later it started right up. Ran fine the rpms were fine. This happened about 4 times on the way in. The motor would just die then start right up.. Where do i start? Could this be the switch box? I will do a compression test tomarrow. by the way it is a 200hp merc 88. Motor was recently rebuilt.

No need to reply to yourself here, Mad. You can just use the Edit Post feature and add to or modify all you want.

Not a Mercspert, so I can't help with the problem.

Good luck. :)

Re: engine dies help!!!!

This could be a stator or a switchbox problem...First check all oil lines to make sure you don't actually have a oil issue, you can also pull the oil pump and inspect the gears for damage....

Second, check the spark on all the cylinders while on the muffs at idle...This will give us an idea if you have an electrical problem.

Its does sound electrcal by the way based on your description.

Let us know...

Bad News, I went and did a compression check today. #1 50psi, #3 50psi #5 75psi #2 & 4 80psi 6 100psi. That wasn't good. The motor was bought 3 months ago and rebuilt. It had a new waterpump. I am clue less of what went wrong.. I contact the rebuilder and I am going to pull the power head and he is going to take a look.

Did you try the "seafoam" cure? I never had that bad of compression problems myself, but apparently that stuff can loosen up all that carbon crap and restore some lost compression.

Mad try some deep creep. It is the same as seafoam only in a spray can. If you can warm up the motor then pull the plugs. Spray the ba-jesus out of it in the plug holes. Put the plugs back in and let it set for a few hours or over night. Seafoam is great stuff but deep creep gets it done. Just my 2 cents.

are you guys serious. the motor locks up and then has compression ranging from 50 to 100 and you are telling me to spray some deep creep in it.

Re: engine dies help!!!!

I was just adding my two cents to Longhorns post. After rereading your post you stated that 3 months ago an alarm went off,you switched the oil pump wire from one post of the switch box to another, every thing is hunky dory. Then the alarm went off only at low rpm's. Motor died at 4500 rpms and you said it didn't turn over. After sitting for 4 minutes it started but died 4 times on the way in. I'm willing to bet that the rings are gone in fact they may be in pieces. That oil pump alarm was your first indicator something was not right. How was the rebuilt engine ran during its break in period? Was extra oil added to the fuel? I've noticed in this forum some folks refer to "it didn't turn over" to it did not start I assumed that was what you meant.

When I said it did't turn over, I ment it was locked up. The motor was properly broken in. I noticed when I took the compression test that the alarm was going of as soon as it started. This makes my think it didn't over heat. How often does the oil pump fail on these motors?? I plan on pulling the powerhead and break it down in a couple of weeks.
