Boat ran great all week, pulling skiers, tubes, cruising. Yesterday, lake was a bit rough and when I would hit some rough water, the engine would could out and in with every bounce.....

It's a '96 190 Sea Ray Bowrider with 4.3 Alpha. I recently installed second battery and switch, but all connections are tight. Going out to take a look at other stuff, so any suggestions are welcome.

Thanks

Ayuh,... My 1st guess is you've got a loose or otherwise Bad wirin' connection, Somewhere,....

The "Shake, Wiggle, Pull" test is 'bout the only way to find it,...

Forgot to mention....sometimes when turning the key to start....nothing happens.....but after 2nd, or 3rd attempt, it works....maybe my ignition switch is causing this issue as well?

17 years old so best start going around all the cables. Could be the throttle micro switch too if having trouble cranking via the key.

Not sure about location on the switch....is it by the carb?

Ayuh,... The Starter circuit safety switch is in the controller,....

Remember, the Starter circuit, 'n the Ignition circuit are independent of each other...

Well, changed the ignition switch, and performed wiggle, shake, pull test running on each battery independently and could not cause the problem. The plug wire from distr to exciter was gummed up pretty nasty on the exciter side, so I cleaned, sprayed, and reconnected. Disconnected all wire connectors on engine to check for corrosion, sprayed and reconnected, but did not find anything disturbing there. Ground wire on block is nice and tight, and the shift switch works, and could not get it to cause the issue by tapping on it while running.

Anything else I should look into? Or do you think maybe the run contacts in the old ignition switch were causing the issue?

FYI...running on muffs for above checks.

Oil pressure switch????

Re: Engine dies in rough water....

Last summer, I lost all electrical while out on the lake. With the help of the guys on this forum, I found that the end of the battery cable connected to the starter solenoid was just loose enough for the cable move a little (in the rough stuff) and touch one of the other bolts on the solenoid -- shorted everything.

Rerouted and tightened the cable and started right up. Saved my trip.
