engine dies under load

Hi Everyone,

Its me again with a problem. I have a 75HP model 75774. I have put a new CD box and coil with engine. The points have been gaped to around .015 and have installed new diaphram in fuel pump and new spark plugs.

When I take the boat out it will start but it takes alot of cranking before it fires.

As soon as I put the engine under load it just stalls. If I start the engine and rev it manually the RPM's rev to full speed (it does sound a little bumpy). It will idle on its own without stalling.

Now, I have cleaned the carbs in Varsol and have blown them out with compressed air. They were not rebuilt. In addition all fuel lines have been replaced.

Does anyone know where to go from here?

Thanks

First reset the points to .014. all three cylinders are set to that. Then check that timing is at 32 deg before tdc at wot.
Get a tach and check that idle in forward gear in the water is about 700-750 rpm. If rpm is too low, engine may idle in neutral but will stall when put in gear. Plugs should be Champion L20V or equivalent. You need to cross reference Champions--They changed to a three number code. See my previous thread on setting timing on a distributor engine.

Yep,

I know it sounds odd but it is true. Chysler did this for awhile before converting to a strictly pointless electronic ignition system.

Don't ask me why???

Johnson and Evinrude did it too !!! It was first generation electronic ignition. I actually prefer it to the later systems. All the points do is to provide the "trigger" to fire the CDI box. Very simple and effective.
