Engine dies when put into gear

I have an 83 3.0 mercruiser it starts up and idles but when I put it into gear the engine dies. Please help me. Where do I start????

Your Lower Shift Cable is Junk,+ needs Replacing....

I have a 78 ebbtide with 140 mercruiser and it does the same thing. I n the back of the motor compartment there is some kind of switch that supposedly allows the motor to be interrupted or almost miss to allow lower unit to ingage . I normally spray wd40 on switch and work it back and forth but i would love to know a real fix for the problem

Ayuh,....

That Switch is Only supposed to work when Disengaging from gear....

You also Need to Replace your Lower Shift Cable.......
