Hi,

Just after, and I mean Just, after changing my carburator and straiting out my linkage issues what happens???

My Oil level seems to be high. Quite high. I start my engine and let it idle for a minuite. Recheck oil and now its really high... and starting to get milky.

I haven't been in the water this year. It has been 2 weeks trying to get a marine carb installed (to replace the existing automotive one) and throttle linkage corrected - so its been started a good few times on muffs trying to dial in the carb. Oil level was good initally. And from the fast rate the water is entering the oil I think whatever failed did so just now and in fine style. Engine was "supposed" to have been winterized as the outdrive was rebuilt by a local boat shop last year at the end of the season and they performed this after the outdrive was rebuilt -and I paid for it to be winterized.

I was supposed to lauch the boat tomorrow. Now it seems like the whole year, or perhaps boating as a whole may be out for me as every time I try to correct an issue another jumps up to take its place. The timing on this was was just ridiculous.

Any body have a outline on how to test and determine the cause? Compresion test I'm guessing. I heard of people saying leak down - but I'm not sure waht that entails. Which are the usual suspects for water getting into the engine base when running on muffs? I gotta go cry OR get a hammer and punch a S*&T load of holes in the hull to end my pain ..... not sure which yet.

Thanks,

:mad::(:mad:

Cracked block. Only thing that will get that much water in the oil. Compression test will not tell you anything.
Isolate the manifolds and pressure test the engine blocks cooling system.

I would be talking to the place that winterized your boat as it sounds like the job was not done correctly.

Below is the outline upon returning the boat to the shop:

First thought from shop owner - manifold rusted thru.

Got a call back after some testing - was told no water getting on spark plugs - leaving Head Gasket or Cracked Block.

Shop advised that frost plugs in place and not "popped out" so engine never froze.

As Don S Posted looking like a cracked block due to volume of water Leaking in. I figure the shop is setting up for "not our fault". Should have the final results tomorrow.

Those are NOT FREEZE PLUGS. They are casting plugs and used for manufacturing ONLY. They have nothing to do with freezing, don't protect from freezing, and don't always pop out when things freeze.

The casting plugs can be in place and you could still have a cracked block.
remove your intake and check the valley behind the pushrods for cracks in your block.

Also, if you were working on the carb, did you by chance take the intake off??
You may have a leak on the intake gasket. The water inlets to the intake thermostat housing could be leaking into the engine.

I had a simular problem. Be sure to use Quicksilver(tm) Perfect Seal or Permatex(tm) Aviation gasket maker on the block and intake, apply the intake gasket, set a 3/8" bead of black RTV gasket sealant on the front and rear of the block and 1/2" onto each corner of the intake gasket. Let thr RTV black set for about an hour before setting the intake inplace. Torque the intake from the center out following the manufactures recomendations.

Your "shop" is feeding you a bit of "Barrbara StreyeSAND" (BS) as it were.

You might consider turning up the heat on them if the block is cracked (and it appears that it might be)

Sorry about that...

The Jury is in and Verdict has been Rendered

The Jury is in and Verdict has been Rendered

The shop upon removeing the Thermostat Housing discouvered the Intake manifold Rusted Thru to the base.

Water was just pouring into the engine. He asked me to drop by and have a look. I did.. and I'll take a picture and post to end this Thread - perhaps it can help others in the future.

Both the Marine Shop and my Auto Mechanic (who I was talking with today upon dropping off my truck in for service) noted that thay had never seen this happen before. My luck continues :D

Anyway the Boat shop stated the engine was gunked up to the point where it's not worth working on... In any case I'm picking it up tomorrow and going to replace the Intake manifold, drain the base, fill with oil and see it it starts. It should as it didn't lock up and was turned off at the key - at least when I had it. If it starts I'll, drain and repeat perhaps put in some Seafoam to clean it up..... if I can get thet far...

What does Gunked up too bad to work on have to do with water intrusion?
You need another boat mechanic!!

Back from Boat Shop

Back from Boat Shop

Hi,

Here is a pic of the rusted thru intake manifold, a little rounder and bigger than it was originally - after the shop owner demonstrating how thin the metal had become with a screwdriver.

It seems like a rare occurring - but is a easy check - so add it to your checklist if having a water intrusion problem. It's right under the Thermostat as you can see in the pic.

So I have the boat back and it seems all is left in the engine is "cappuccino Foam" as it appears that the fluid was pumped out before my picking it up - really nothing showing on the dipstick. I'll include pick of under the Intake. Who wants to place bets that this is now seized/stuck/hydro locked - which was not the case when I dropped it off?

I Proceeded get another Intake Manifold, to clean up what I could, put on a new filter and put in a 4 to 1 mix of oil and tranny fluid. I hope to have it ready to attempt starting it this weekend.

All I have to say is that is amazing...I am glad I added a neutra salt system to my boat.

Did that engine ever get flushed out after running in salt water? From all the rust around the valve covers, it looks like a neglected engine.

Re: Engine Filling with Water - 5.0 Cobra

I'd agree... I bought the boat beginning of last season - good deal I thought - but being a newbie I didn't know what to look for. Since the beginning I had outdrive issues big time - paid to have it rebuilt at very end of season and had winterized -big $$$ but 1 year warranty.

This spring I refinished all teak, had some upholstery and canvas redone - found out that the carb was auto and bought correct one..etc... on and on... I was just about all ready to hit the water and as per my posts never got there as the water was bailing into the base.

I truly love on the water but this has been one hell of an introduction. A brief history of my experience so far:

Fresh water cooling,,,,thank gawd my boat has it.

How long did it take for the problem to be located?

How old are your exhaust manifolds and mixing elbows?

Cast iron parts that are inches from the waterline, stay moist and rot very quickly.

Congrats on having that repair in your wake

I'm glad I have closed cooling also!!

Shop advised that frost plugs in place and not "popped out" so engine never froze.

Don't ever let anyone tell you that. It is quite incorrect! (I'm surprised that a shop would even try it)

If you get another block, consider closed cooling and you'll never have that problem again.

Good luck,

Rick

You would be surprised what someone calls a marine shop, and even then some of those marine shops doen't have a clue. There are a lot of them out there. Sad, but true.

Another good product for de-gunking an engine is Rislone. You should be aboe to find at most auto parts stores. Diesel fuel works good too, just dont run it too long.

If your engine was running before it should be ok. As long as there was oil in with the water.

I agree that it is time to find a reputable shop. Sounds like they just want to sell you a new engine.

Finnished the repair a few weeks back.

Running well now - been out on the water 5 or so times. Oil pressure reads to read high on the guage above 3000k but it seems to be less an issue with each trip.

Hope itit keeps up Cod recreational fishery opening this saturday.
