I have a '98 merc 115 and i recently flooded the motor while docked at a restaurant. I was kind of embarrassed when i could not get it started. My question is whats the fastest way to start a flooded motor? I don't plan on flooding it again but it would be nice to know of a quick remedy just in case. Thanks for the response.

Re: ENGINE FLOODED

I squirt some Starting fluid into the breather box, and start engine(with NO throttle) until it busts off. Also if your battery is getting weak, it will not get enough spark to the plugs while cranking, adding to the flooding problem.

Re: ENGINE FLOODED

Cranking the motor with the throttle wide open helps get more air in the combustion chamber to evaporate the fuel..

But if it starts, make sure you are qiuck with the throttle..

Scott..

I agree with Skinsk, general rule of thumb starting flooded engines in the field whether its a lawn mower or a OB or a car is let it set a bit with the throttles open and then crank it with full throttle. Since many OBs won't let you crank with full throttle sometimes you may need to open the throttle by hand at the linkage on the carb. Just be ready to kill the engine if necessary so as not to overrev it. In really bad cases you may need to pull the plugs and air it out.

Don't crank for more than 4-5 seconds at a whack to save your starter.

Starting fluis is noething more than eather. Its all and well to use it in an emergency, but dont use it unless you have to. That stuff takes away the lubrication from your fuel and puts major ware on your internal parts. Its not even good on vehicles, just use it in emergensies.
