Engine flooded?

Hello... Had a bit of a problem with my Volvo Penta 3.0 2008 yesterday.

It was running normally on land. I filled it up with gas and launched it into the sea. I gave it a bit of throttle and cranked the engine, but it wouldn't start. I kept trying and still nothing. I then noticed fuel leaking from near the carburetor throttle (Holley 2300). I then restricted the fuel line and it started. Once I let go of the fuel line it kept running roughly, then ran normally but was smoking a lot. This kept up for 45 minutes or so, there was also black residue in the water. Oil level was half an inch higher than when I had last checked it on land, looked thinner and smelt of petrol. I then drove it for a 4 minutes or so at 2k rpm, then 5 or 6 minutes at 3k. Smoke reduced by a lot. haven't checked anything since. What should I do next? What do you think caused it? Thank you

could be a stuck float or needle/seat ($6 part)
could be fuel coming up the clear hose from the fuel pump indicating a ruptured fuel pump diaphragm

both issues will cause fuel to dump down the throat of the carb causing it to run bad vs dumping into the bilge turning your boat into a one-time explosive way to meet Jesus

Thanks for your replies. Should have mentioned that I removed the flame arrestor and did not notice any fuel inside the carb, so I'm not sure how it happened
