I've changed the cables and the crank case oil? It does go into gear, just makes a really bad grinding noise. I when the prop spins backward, it seems really stiff when slowing down. When I stop from going forward, it gradually stops. Is it something in the lower unit? Thanks guys!

Does anyone have a clue or know where I should start?

Still waiting for a response. I took the prop off and ran the engine and the motor shifts as smooth as ever in reverse and forward. Could it maybe be the bearings in my prop?

Shifting should be done crisply neither jamming it in gear nor dragging it slowly into gear.
I don't understand your description.
Your gear case has a shift dog that slides to engage the gears. The Dog has 2 lobes the mesh with 2 lobes on the gears
so they do crunch as they mesh. Your motor idle needs to be right, about 700 rpm.
If too high it will crunch harder and will cause premature wear.
