Hi Big bass
I would give it a complete servicing. Test compression, check ignit\charging system, clean and inspect fuel system, service water pump and inspect cooling system. service lower unit, drain oil, remove prop greese prop shaft, greese what ever you can think of. By doing these little tasks, you will find those getchya things. Best thing to do is obtain a manual. It should line things out for you.

Alcan is right -- and thorough. I tend to be a little impatient with a "new" motor, and want to see what I've got. At a minimum, I'll pull the bowl off the carb and clean it out. If it's clean (no gunk or varnish), I have a pretty good idea that the fuel system is probably OK. I check the plugs, and clean and regap them. If it's electric start, I clean (sandpaper) all the connections. At that point, I get some fresh gas and oil, mix about a gallon, put the unit in water and try to fire it up. The first thing to check (assuming it fires up) is whether it's pumping water. Look for a telltale and for water to spray heavily out of the exhaust port on the leg. If no water after a few seconds, shut it down and assume you need to install a new water pump. If it is pumping water, check the temperature of the head after running a bit -- should be able to hold your hand on the top of the head for a few seconds at least. You can also be checking the electricals now -- check to see if the battery is charging (need a voltmeter).

If all goes well with the above test, you will want to replace the water pump even though it is currently working (at least you know that you have water circulation -- no blockages). The impeller is due to be replaced, and the lower unit oil replaced (and checked for water intrusion). Then it's on to the electrical system, if needed....

I'm not real savvy on alot of some of this boating stuff but I do have a little experience tuddiling around with some outboards. I've done alot of research and I'm an ASE certified mechanic. The Evinrude engines are supposed to be some of the best out there. You don't have to work on em anytime you wanna go to da lake. So I bought one yesterday(evinrude 70) to replace the Force 125 that's on there. Yeah I lose a few hoursepower but im after dependability and more time on the water. But that's opinion and I'll let y'all know how it turns out once I'm done. Good day!
