Is a 9.9 honda big enough to use as a trolling motor for a 1989 Seaswirl Striper 210
Also, what length shaft should be used? 20"?

Re: Engine HP

My Yamaha 9.9 pushes my 18 ft fiberglass Deep V walleye boat about 8-9 mph. Many of the big 21 ft, 3000+ pound walleye boats up here in WI have a 9.9 for a kicker.

Long shaft would be best, or maybe even a Sailboat extra long, depending on the transom of the boat.

You could always change the prop if you felt you needed a bit more control

Re: Engine HP

Got a 2012 9.9 merc pro-kicker on my 20' deep V, Love it. Get 7mph max but also remember at those speeds your a displacement hull going through the water, not "on" it. More HP won't get much more speed than that until you get the hull up on plane, think sailboat. I got the 25" shaft because it doesn't make much difference if the prop is to deep at trolling speed. I thought if/when I should get a different boat with a deeper transom I won't need to buy a new longer shaft trolling motor. True kicker motors have a different gear ratio so you can use a high thrust prop and you will get more control at low speeds, think sailboat again. I fully expect that this motor with proper care will last the rest of my life. Heck, I'm still using an old chrysler 7.5 for duck hunting that was my grandfathers.

That hull is very likely a 30" transom. You will need to get an EX kicker (if they have such) or bolt it to a mount. It will be OK in a lake. Not sure how it will work in an ocean.

Re: Engine HP

On length, long enough so that with it in the troll position, you can get up forward of your boat on the trailer, stoop down and see the whole prop beneath the bottom of the boat. They need NEW water to perform satisfactorily. On hp, you got that answer above.
