Okay, got a shop book today, (seloc omc sterndrives, 1964-1986), has engines similar to mine, but not mine. Mine has a heat exchanger, and power steering, (evident from the power steering pump on the engine). The manual doesnt cover power steering, or heat exchangers. The boat is a 1980 slick craft, omc 260. Here are the OMC engine numbers, (off the valve cover OEM, OMC engine ID plate, not the block numbers); 990262K, left area of plate, and to the right; 706120. Can anyone tell me DEFINITIVLY what year and engine I have, so I can get everything I need and have the ability to read this f-ing book and fix my boat?!!?? PPPLLLLEEEEAAAASSSSSEEEEEEE HHHEEEELLLLLLLPPPPPPPPP!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

Thank you bond-o, or should I say, Capt. Obvious? Yes, I know that it is a gm 350 w/ a stringer outdrive. What I don't know is the ins and outs of the heat exchanger system, or the power steering. I posted the engine I.D. numbers in the faint hope that some one out there knows EXACTLY what engine it is, (I.E. if the boat was repowered, original power, after market add ons, year of motor, etc.), and maybe why I can't find this engine, (other than, "GM 350", or "5.7 liter"), in the manual. Apparently the Seloc company decided, (in there infinate wisdom), not to include a section on heat exchanger systems or marine power steering. Therefore, when I, "C.T.F.M", (consult the f-ing manual), There is no information on these systems, and my boaters frustration skyrockets. Im just a poor commercial fisherman trying to get his, "work truck", ready for halibut season. This is my first I/O, and I'll be glad when she's up and running, if I don't hang my self with the shift cable first!

THANK YOU DON!!!!!!!!! You are a King among men, a man among children, and a GOD, among mortals!!!!!!!! This helps greatly! The only thing I did'nt see was a heat exchanger system, but, I can figure that out on my own, I think. If your ever down here in the San Francisco bay area, (during halibut season), PM me and I'll take you out with me on a fishing trip, (that way if my mechanical skills fail, you'll have no other choice but to fix her! lol!).

Yes, I would like to know what drive it is!!! The boot has 22 holes around it, I was told that might have somthing to do with the model of the drive. Since the boat is 83 miles from me, thats all the info I can give you right now.

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

Right !

The Stringer series drives went to 86'. 78'-81' was the hydro-mechanical series in the stringer series. Worst one of the lot. What you want is the fully mechanical 82'-86'.

The good news is you can just hang a 82'-86' on the intermediate on the boat that it already has.

The bad news is parts for the hydro-mechanical is the rarest and hardest to find. Some guy i just finished helping can't find the cable for his.

Your locked into buying the boat? If not don't.

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

Boat was given to me by my old boss, capt. rick powers, new sea angler, bodega bay sportfishing. already got motor for it. My dad is a hydraulic engineer, (designed all hydro's for sea wolf subs!!!). If I have problems with it, maybe he can help. if not, where can I find replacement and how much for the 82-86?

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

Seen the whole leg for as low as 400 bucks. Why you want to get tangled up with this drive is crazy and i do not recommend it. I wish i had someone advise me before i started with mine.

Some boss you got gave you lemons and asked you to make lemonaide.

Rip out the whole drive and start with the new motor and get your hands on a merc drive from everything behind the drive out.. Do it now before you get in so far like me, you never can get out.

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

Then why did you say that I could just, "hang an 82-86 on the intermediate", and this was , "good news"? Then you tell me Im pretty much screwed? So, once again, I'm confused. Am I screwed, or not?

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

I'll start all over. The drive is obsolete, i have it on my boat but the 86'.

When you get done fixing and getting the whole drive and motor together,if you keep the stringer, you will have a obsolete drive, that is difficult to get parts for.

You will be stuck with it and never be able to sell it.

Depends on what you think screwed is.

You can rip it out and sell it the drive, and being so many guys refusing to give up on it might make enough to pay for a modern drive system.

You are in a unique position, you can do it all when you get the boat and pull the motor cause your doing it anyway.

You can start from scratch and have a boat when your finished that will go 20 years no problem.

The choice is yours, i'm just giving my opinion, and all the info i can.

You want to pick my brain go ahead, i'll advise you like you were my own kid.

Think over ten times before you do whatever your gonna do, make up your mind i will be here.

Any way you go there are great mechanical minds here, they all are ready to help you, just ask.

Good luck !

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

sorry 'bout that.... ......you hinted that a newer stringer lower would just bolt on to the intermediate, is this corect? If so, I'll replace mine and save it as my spare. I'll keep you posted.

Re: Engine I.d. Numbers????????

Dont know what happened, wrote some stuff then it disapeared. Anyway.... THANK YOU VERY MUCH CHIEF!!! Now I'm clear. Unfortunatly around here mechanics wont give you a straight answer without a, "cash incentive". I found an 84 lower for 500.00 bucks in Az. That I'm going to get. Guy says he was an OMC cert. mech. from 69 till they went belly up. Says drive is in near perf. condition. Going ahead w/ the build, will keep you posted, Thanx again.
