I'm trying to identify my engine, as specifically as possible. What I know for sure is that it is a 1990 Mercruiser, 5.7 V8. My Seloc manual would suggest that it's a GM 350, V8 small block, made between 1987 and 1991. I'd like to find a serial number or ID plate for peace of mind when it comes to ordering parts etc. and the same manual says the ID plate is above the starter motor or on the starboard side, between the flywheel bell housing and the block. I can't get near the starter which seems to be tucked up behind the exhaust manifold/riser. Likewise I can't see any ID on the starboard side. Any clues or suggestions ?

On a separate topic, my fuel gauge reads full when I switch on the ignition. All electrical connections check out fine with no grounding issues at the tank/sender, as do the connections at the gauge itself. I took the sender from the tank and operated it by hand and the gauge worked in tandem, corresponding to the movement on the sender, rising and falling accordingly, which suggests to me that the sender is working. But according to the manual, if this is the case, then the sender should be replaced! This doesn't make any sense to me. Am I missing something? Any thoughts appreciated.

The ID is in that location. Here is the link showing where it should be

If it's not there the motor may have been replaced. For the most part I do think you will be safe using a 1990 7.5

As for the fuel gauge. Remove tank sender wire, turn ignition ON, gauge should show Empty. Now ground the sender lead, gauge should show Full. If all checks out, remove sender and measure ohms between terminal and case ground. You should see somewhere around 33 ohms (Full) to 240 ohms (Empty)

Use your phone or a mirror to get the serial number. Use the seloc manual as a knee pad and go to the stickies for links to the real Mercruiser manuals online
