First, I'm new here and new to boat motors so please bear with me. I'll probably ask many stupid questions.<br />I purchased a Johnson 25hp recently from my son, who purchased it from someone else, etc, etc....<br />The problem is that I can't find an ID plate on it anywhere so that I can find out what year and model it is. My son seems to think its an '89, but I can't verify this in any way. I've looked at the websites people have posted like "Dockside" etc with no help. The "Dockside" website won't open up the Johnson archives.<br />Is there any other way of identifying this motor?<br />Please help. I can take pictures of it and post them if that will help. I'm guessing that this is a 2 stroke and needs oil mixed with the gas but I don't know how to tell. There isn't an extra "oil tank" anywhere. <br />

Re: Engine Identity Problems

Welcome PKemp :) <br /><br />Try locating the aluminum freeze plug on the motor, it should have the model and serial #'s stamped on it, the model# will have several letters in it.

Got it Master Chief, I'll look tonight to see if I can find the plug. Any suggestions on where it is on the engine though?

Try looking on the side or top of the block, should be silver in color unless its been painted over.

Nope. I've scoured the bugger. No Tag anywhere. I believe an ardent duck hunter owned this at one time since its been painted swamp camo and there was a "Duck Hunter's Assoc" sticker on the cowling. I removed most of the paint very carefully (white underneath) but not a sign of a tag, plate or stamp anywhere on the transom bracket, cowling or housing. I'll be looking for the freeze plug tonight. I'll let you know what I find......

Well, you just never know until you get out the rubber gloves and Xylol (nasty stuff). I found that ID plate underneath the motor on the transom bracket. Not on the side, underneath. Covered with paint. Got it cleaned off and it says:<br />Model No. J25RCEM<br />Serial No. R08200695.<br />By the way, I did find that silver looking plug on the right side of the motor (facing the plugs) with the R08200695 number stamped into it also. Thanks Gentlemen.....<br />Okay..... What have I got? I know its a 25hp, but what year?

Re: Engine Identity Problems

Persistance pays off!<br />J - Johnson<br />25 - 25hp<br />R - Rope Start<br />CE - '89<br />M - Model run code (meaningless)<br /><br />The date code works like this:<br />INTRODUCES<br />1234567890<br />So ED would be '96, since E=9 and D=6

Re: Engine Identity Problems

Okay. Thank you. I just ordered the Factory service and repair and owners and parts manuals for it. Now I have a chance.

on most engines there is a round plug on the top of the motor, about the size of a quarter.you may have to clean it of so you can read it,but that should have the sn.on it,take that sn. to the tag office they can run it. or you can take it to a omc dealer and they can look it up for you.And that motor will be a 2 stroke mix gas to oil ratio 50 to 1.GOOD LUCK
