Engine keeps dying after 6-7 minutes??

Hi,<br /><br /> Thanks for all your help in my previous questions, u've all been most helpfull, I have a little problem thats bugging me.<br /><br />On my 5hp outboard (Penta), it starts and runs fine, but after about 7 minutes it just dies, after about a minute its starts ok and is ok for another 7 minutes, and so on......<br /><br />The carb has been cleaned and its not situated near anywhere hot, could it be the plug?? as its just a old plug i had lying around as i dont know the correct plug type.<br /><br />Any ideas anyone?<br /><br />Thanks,<br /><br /> Graham.

??? weak fuel pump??? maybe, if your engine has one. Or and air leak in the fuel hose or primer bulb?<br /><br />Does it have a primer bulb in the gas line? If so, try pumping it up while engine is running. Do this every couple of minutes.<br /><br /> If it keeps running, then at least you have narrowed it down to the fuel system.

sounds like a coil getting hot and shutting down then when it's cooled it starts up again, just a thought

Hi again Graham<br /><br />The fuel pump can be checked like this: When the motor stops after 7 minutes, carefully pull the fuel hose that leads from pump to carbureator off the carbureator. Pull starter rope. If fuel squirts out of hose in small squirts, pump is OK. Look out that the fuel doesnt hit anything hot, as far as I remember exhaust manifold is very hot on this model. Is your tank vented ? If so try to run it with cab off, it could sound like it cant pull air in, to replace the used fuel. Lack of tank ventilation will cause pump not to pump. sorry for this long reply. Let us know.

might be overheating caused by lost water pickup on underside of cavitation plate, or leaking seals at either end of pipe that takes water up from there to one side of the exhaust manifold. ( whereupon the water runs back down another channel on the other side of the manifold and then drains out inside the leg and out the exhaust vent at the back of the cavitation plate just behind the pickup I mentioned)<br />Or simply restriction caused by partial blockage generally (corroded aluminium) throughout this waterway.

My guess would be fuel tank ventilation followed by restricted fuel flow at a filter. Let us know your findings.

I sort of think that after a year, Dragon has solved his problem one way or another. <br /><br />Moving to Other Outboard troubles.
