So I've gone and overhauled the gearcase and replaced the clutch dog... and it still kicks!

Is it possible that the linkages and hardware that move the clutch dog need some adjustment?

Did you replace the forward gear. A rounded/worn clutch doge will round off/wear the gear too where it mates with it.

Didn't replace the forward gear, but it looked OK as far as I can tell.

Could the clutch/shift handle or the shifter rod somehow be out of position or need adjustment?

Forgot to add... when I drive and hold the shifter handle firmly in the "forward" direction, the problem seems to go away or improve.

did you get the shift linkage back together properly, it may not be engaging properly.
