It is good that the compression checks ok. Pull the spark plugs, shine a light in there and see if the knocking cylinder looks like the other three. Once you get all the plugs firing, check the plug tips and see if they all look the same. It is not unusual for upper or lower bearings to go bad if the engine had water in the fuel, or if it was not winterized properly. Pull the plugs out and hand rotate the crank. Listen to any sounds it makes, and if there is any difference between the cylinders. Check for abnormal crank end play as it rotates. You could even pull the side covers off an have a look inside, or the exhaust cover. Both get you a look inside the engine and costs only a few $ for gaskets.
