Really does sound like belt or belt driven accessory... did you try and run it with the belt/belts off for a few see if the sound remains? The water pump will be disconnected by removing the belt/belts but it should be fine for a minute or two.

I have heard that before, I really think that is a ROD bearing, that sound is the bearing spinning.
Take off each spark plug till the knock goes away, and then see if sound goes away.
I agree with the above post. Take all belt off and run it, see what happens.

Thanks guys will try the above first and see what happens. I told my neighbor the whole story and he was saying could be a collapsed lifter. Wishing I would have replaced those when I had the intake out. Oh well, learning things the hard way some times.

Dude – That’s a belt squealing not a rod knock. Take the belts off and start it and see what happens. No more than a min or two….. Post a video!.....Also don’t listen to your neighbor – he does not have a clue, A COLLAPS LIFT DOES NOT SQUEEL….IT TICKS/TAPS……….Also do not put 7 quarts of oil in your motor…It calls for 5 QUARTS. You will be blowing motor oil everywhere. Just tring to help!

Ok ok. Damn alternator belt is difficult to get tight for some reason. Im going to take another crack at everything first with outdrive off (garden hose in hole) and belt tightened. Wanting to rull out alignment issues. You'll will be invited to the after party if i get this thing fixed.

You don't need it tight. You need the right amount of tension on it, no more no less. Check the manual, you need about a 1/4 or 1/2 inch play when you push down on it.

ok guys so I got the alternator belt tightened up a wee better, cranked down the bolts good and tight. sequel went away, yea. I also pulled outdrive off and run on it hose and vibration/knock went away so ok, my alignment is off. Engine is sounding pretty good now, no ominous noises. Still have ignition problem though, starting a new thread on that though.

I messed around with this a little bit this summer. I'm now accepting that it probably is in fact a spun rod bearing. I was thinking about today, whats the chances that a piston can bend a valve and not spin the bearing?

Really you are still working on this!
If you had a bent valve you would be low compression on a cylinder and / or that cylinder would be dead.
Do a compression test. and / or do the spark plug pull thing to find what cylinder that is dead.
I remembered from way back that I thought it was a rod bearing.

As of today I'm no longer going to do any work on it....however..hehe...I can't help but wonder what the problem is.

Ya compression test checked out ok. Thinking rod bearing as well. Considering giving the darn thing away. Where do boats go to die?

If you are that frustrated with it.
I have your answer. Just run the **** out of it, have a great day on the water and wait for it to get worse or break.
Then you will know exactly what is wrong.
Drive like you stole it.
