Re: Engine "Missing"

Larry,
Just a thought, I keep thinking timing. Check the manual for the correct timing and see if you are close. Sounds like it may not be advancing as the rpm's jump.

A quick and easy way to check for crankcase leaks is while the engine is running, use a can of WD40 and spray along the gaskets (and bolts etc) if you do have a leak the WD40 will seal it just long enough for the rpms to jump up. Just a thought

Happy Boating
Link

Re: Engine "Missing"

At long last im sorted.
Its always the simple things is'ent it?(embarrising even)
After 3 weeks of begging, my mechanic came last night.
I was working on this engine in my driveway.
Anytime i wanted to rev the engine I just pulled on the lever on the carbs. When you do this it DOES NOT advance the timing. In essence I had already sorted the problem but because of the backfiring I thought I still had a problem. The mixture was not correct on number 1 and 2 cyls and thats why it was weak on those. Many, many thanks to you all and in paticular JIMD who was with me on this one from the start.
May all of you stay safe on your boats. You have been great. :)

Jimd,
Apperently when you move the gear lever to go forward it also moves advance timing to coincide with the move up in revs.
When I was revving it by hand at the carbs this does not happen, hence the backfiring.
Ahh well, I still cant get over the amount of people who wanted to help.
Brilliant.
Thanks a million.
Slán Leat.
