there is a gizmo that enables you to run a diesel engine on used fryer oil, i think that it is basically a heated tank and a damn good filter! fryer oil is available for free in many places - they are glad to get rid of it.if you google it you will find the manufacturer

Many forklifts used indoors are propane fueled. So are many farm tractors. The engines differ very little from petrol fueled engines.

Shouldn't be a major job to convert a small auto engine.

On the other hand, I have owned two Kubota Diesels, one three cylinder and one four cylinder. Don't let the HP figures fool you, these little machines are torque monsters.

You would need to regear a small car to get full advantage from converting to a small Diesel, as they peak their power at 2200 to 2800rpm.

I remember my 1964 Mercedes 190Diesel. It was rated at 60HP. It got 32 to 40mpg cruising at 60-65. That was a 3300 pound car. Just think what a similar power to weight ratio would do in something like a Metro, or better yet, a dune buggy weighing around 1500lb.

Well, the metro body was in good shape, the engine needed valve work. And from what my dad's old partner at the shop told me (let us put it on his lift), they usually require a new head, because you will crack the old one most of the time.

And the clutch was on it's last leg.

Don't need another project right now, at least not at that price. It would have been a great start to use as a conversion car, but too much $ for what it needed.

JRJ has had this right from the get go. It is all about the time to payback any investment. Including changes for fuel economy. If you can't get all of the money back within two years then it is just wasting dough . . .

Second place goes to Skinnywater. The idea of cutting off that rod is actually pretty good. It would result in a throttle that is wider open more oftener . . . Same benefit that you would get with the 18 bhp deal. Believe it or not, spark engines (Otto cycle) get their best fuel economy along the wide open throttle power curve. Anytime an engine is sucking a vaccuum it is inefficient.

If starting from scratch, diesel all the way. They're always at WOT ;)

With propane, hardened valve seats need to be fitted (most alloy heads have them anyway).

The biggest problem, in a small car, is finding room for the tank.

That's a problem with all gaseous fuels. Especially Hydrogen . . .

Best engine mod is a slow rod driver.
Air in the tires and a clean air filter.

Why does everyoner forget Ethanol? I had a Ranger that could use it and I did. It had more power when on E-85 than gas but goe 2-4 mpg less unloaded. Pulling or hauling actually got better milage than on gasoline.

I could tell E-85 was in the tank only when you stepped on the gas it was better. It cold started or warm started you could not tell what you were using.

The only issue I had was the SOB at the ONLY station charged .10 more per gallon. Even now his price is .10 more than regular and I know that the price of Ethanol has not gone up!!!

I almost wished I lived in MN,lots of E-85 stations, instead of NM but in a month or so I would have regreted MN due to chattering teeth and no more boating. :D

Real, E85 gas was $2.18 a few days ago when 87 gas was $2.79. To bad I don't have a FFV. Will try to get one next time around.

Maybe I'll get a tahoe or yukon FFV next time. I believe Ford is making the F150 with a FFV option for 2006. Maybe Ford will have FFV expedition in 2007 when the new model comes out or a diesel :D . I can only hope.
