Engine mount play

I recently noticed the motor moving around a bit when at Idle, upon closer inspection I found the lower connection of the rod the motor pivots on to turn has about 1/4 inch of play. I searched BRP site for replacement mounts and couldn't find anything. There must be a rubber bushing in there which is worn out. Can anyone give me a part number or link to the process of replacing, I've been told its a royal pain if the motor has been in saltwater. Here is a similar motor, I drew in the red arrow.

Re: Engine mount play

the play is where the shaft, number 29, enters the mount, number 78. Based on the play, I imagined a rubber bushing, like number 3, inside the mount. could the retainer clip, #87, cause this play?

I know it needs to be fixed, but is this mount play dangerous? I figure it could disrupt steering if it gets much worse...

Looking at it to me #3 is UPPER bushing. But I dont see a lower bushing I,d guess the retainer clip is just as it says a retainer not related to the slop.Have you dissambled it? maybe there is a lower bushing??? I,d say #31 thrust washer #5 seal then just like the top the lower bushing.Only breaking it down will tell.

Yeah, I don't want to break it down if thats just how a 35 year old motor is!!!! The wobble is only noticeable at idle. Maybe others with an old 55hp can chime in....

Your motor would be very similar to mine component wise in this area so i went out and checked my '82 60hp by levering the lower back and forth, there was little if any noticeable movement.....i will be firing it up sometime this friday and will check again and report back, dont think it would make much difference though......

When was the last time the nipple on the swivel bracket saw some grease? I boat in saltwater 99% of the time and give all the grease points regular attention......just a thought.

Re: Engine mount play

Run it long enough like that and everything else will need replacing.

very similar setup, I actually noticed the play when greasing the swivel, because old grease was coming from that circular joint. Leads me to think the lower seal is bad, maybe the seal also keeps it tight? The illustration shows threading on the base of the shaft, yet just a "retainer clip" holds it. Maybe there is more going on inside the mount....

The video shows a water leak from the mount, but you can also see the play in the shaft and mount join. It may be more like 1/8 inch, but noticeable.

Agreed if you dont want to break it down I would get it to a shop,The movement will expand to the upper bushing,From there who knows what. The way its moving a repair may be more than just a cheap bushing???
If you go to the BPR site look up the motor,Notice part #3 is a bushing,If you click on it it states 2 required,The one the parts list states UPPER so a second with 2 required and one called UPPER must be a lower. Dont ya think???

Re: Engine mount play

interesting, I didn't see it so figured it don't exist. Maybe its located inside the lower mount? Has anyone done this repair?? I'd like to get some input before I try it. It took some convincing to get me to do a carb job on this motor, now I can rebuild them with my eyes closed!!

The second bushing would be for the lower end of the swivel bracket.....

Not certain but there may actually be splines near the bottom of the pivot shaft followed by a groove for the retaining clip, do you think it might actually be splined into the mount bracket?.....makes sense to me. If you tilt the motor right up you should be able to look in there from the underside of the mount bracket and see the bottom of the pivot shaft/retaining clip, maybe that will shed some light, its possible part of the bracket/shaft has broken away.

I have never had one of these apart but after studying the exploded view for awhile i cannot see how you could get in there to service it without major disassembly.....i hope someone who knows better than me chimes in with a less invasive way to get this done.

Re: Engine mount play

good idea mark, the diagram does show threads/splines at the bottom of the shaft, where it meets the mount. I was going to disassemble yesterday but got distracted by the trailer, had some real bad looking hardware on the springs I had to replace. Not quite sure how she managed to get home last trip!! Well thanks for the help, I will report back any findings, seems to be a rare problem I am having. I couldn't find anything pertaining to it in the 500+ page manual I have!!
