engine noise (knocking)

Some piece of metal the dropped into #7 cyld.via the intake.....must have went in the carb and past the intake valve and was dancing around on top of the piston making his knocking sound.

You're in that deep might as well do new rods and mains....I would have the crank checked also....

I'd do the bearings and I'd check the cam for wear, "modern" motor oils do a lousy job of protecting the sliding surfaces between the cam and flat tappet lifters. Maybe get a timing chain if it's approaching spec (3/8" deflection) I had my 89 5.7 motor out last year, the oil pump had no wear so I kept it.
