I had my boat out this past weekend, and when i cranked the motor, there was a whinning noise when the starter was engaged. This was not a metal grinding sound as i have heard in automotive use, this was more like a high pitched whine. It seemed to crank up fine, and the engine ran with out any problems. There was just that extra noise.

I can only assume its the starter, should i plan on replacing it asap?

The boat is a 94 bayliner capri with 3.0L Mercruiser I/O

Thanks

Ayuh,... Atleast Pull it,+ inspect it... Maybe replace it...

Get New bolts if you do...

does it do it everytime you start the boat or only when the motor is cold? it might not be the starter at all but a belt or pully bearing. disconnect the coil wire and have a buddy crank the engine and listen to where its comming from. water recurculating pumps can do that and go away after idle rpms are met as well as power steering pumps when the resovior is getting low. best of luck to you, its good you are a preventitive maintainence person always pay attention to sounds and vibrations it will save $$$$ when caught early!!
