After adjusting the shifter cable, the engine does not want to fire up. It will fire a little when the throttle is depressed. What could cause this? I put a new fuel filter on when it was running. What else should I check?

If the fuel filter was a spin on water seperator type, try filling it with gas and re-trying.

Also if the cable adjustment is wrong, you could be trying to run the engine on half your cylinders. Two just ain't gonna work well.

DHP

You probably are now engaging the ESA.

So what was the verdict on your shift cable?

shift cable is not replaced yet. Is the ESA the switch next to the shifter cable on the engine? If so its not depressed.

Trace the wires coming out of the ESA module, they should go to a 2 wire round plug and a round 4 wire plug, disconnect the 2 wire plug, this is power for the ESA and the ground wire to the neg side of the coil, this will effectively eliminate the ESA for testing purposes, if it starts fine then you need to further determine what's activating the ESA.

I disconnected the plug and it still will not fire up, What else should I check for?

The carb is getting gas, I can see it spray when I touch the throttle. I am going to check for spark next.

I am getting a strong spark, but the plugs are wet with gas, is that from tring to start it so much?

Where did you check for spark right at the end of a plug wire with a plug attached, did you see the spark jump across the plug?

Yes I tested right at the end of a plug and had seen a nice big spark.

Well...back to basics, all you need is fuel, compression and spark, you say you have fuel and spark...compression??? and of course it has to be at the right time, is it possible your timing chain has jumped a tooth or 2? Might need to go back and verify initial timing, putting #1 cyl at TDC and see where if the rotor is pointing at # 1 in the distibutor.

The compression is at 1=140,2=150,3=140,4=140, Factory compression is 160, I dont think that my #'s would effect not starting. Checking timing now.

Re: Engine not starting omc 2.3

I checked the inital timing and it was pointing at # 1. What could be wrong??????????? I hate to take it in to figure out this problem! How can I check for bad gas, like if there was water in my gas or somthing. The gas is new though.

You can try running it from a secondary tank, but get the fuel out of the carb first in case there's water in there. Have you given it a tune up? I had the same problem with a defective condenser last year.

Changed the plugs, cap and roter look good, I will try a scondary tank. I am getting a great spark - with a bad condenser would you still have spark?

How long has it been sense you did a full tuneup. Points, condenser, cap, rotor, plugs, set dwell, then timing, check advance timing, adjust carb? When was all that done last?

Re: Engine not starting omc 2.3

Never, just got the boat and it was running great, and then all of a sudden it would not start up. I have changed the plugs & fuel filter thats it. Do you think I should change the cap, roter, points, and condenser? How do I test the condenser?
