Re: Engine Oil, here we go again

What is the API Spec on the Mercury Quicksilver oil? I seem to remember that it had quite a bit of Zinc in it and auto enthusiasts were picking it up as it was cheaper than the racing and diesel oils that are common to have zinc in them.. The EPA relegated the reduction of Zinc in automotive motor oils as it is a pollutant but necessary for the longevity of flat tappet camshafts, so even trucks and cars from the mid 90's that still had flat tappet cams will actually get the wrong oil if you just go and buy whatever from the store shelf. It will run with about anything but the cam will wear overtime... This is why I'm curious as to the API spec of the QS oil as I don't think it is regulated by the EPA in the same way and is likely 'good old' oil with lots of zinc

Post 1996 GM based motors with the exception of the 3.0 have roller cams and zinc isn't as much an issue. Its motors with flat tappet cams that need zinc.

You can use oil with high zinc on a roller can, however its not doing anything.

I personally have issues with quicksilver lubricants. Sort of like only buying GM labeled oils or Ford labeled Oils.

Good post, I guess I don't need Zinc then on my 2001. I agree about quicksilver they corner the market, too bad wally world don't sell 20w- 40 synthetic.

Some say both synthetic and natural oil are comparable in performance when new. They say after time in the motor that the synthetic oil breaks down less, hence you can stretch your oil change a bit more. In that respect synthetic is better but not to most of us boaters that don't get much time on our oil between changes each year.
