Engine oil!!!

I recently purchased a remanufactured engine for my larson dc 190 cuddy cabin. Could any one give me any input on which oil to use for the initial startup process?

Non synthetic. 30W would work fine.

I can't think of anyone who makes a straight 30 synthetic.
Rotella straight 30 in the gallon jugs at any auto parts stores or truck stops is easy to find and a great oil.
Not to get another oil thread going but i have used it for years.

The reason you don't use synthetic for breakin is because it prevent the rings from seating properly (aka breaking in). The cylinders just end up getting glazing over before breakin in the new rings, then you loose some compression and burn more oil.

I`d make sure to "pre-oil" the motor internals first, BEFOR starting it for the very first time.

I can't think of anyone who makes a straight 30 synthetic.
Rotella straight 30 in the gallon jugs at any auto parts stores or truck stops is easy to find and a great oil.
Not to get another oil thread going but i have used it for years.

Gary, I never said a straight 30 weight synthetic, I just meant any synthetic oil.

Yes I agree Bt, I ALWAYS prime the oil pump on my engines before initial startup.

Don, Thanks for explaining it, Now that I think about it, it all makes perfect sense. So It should be OK to switch to synthetic the next oil change then right?
Oy yeah, remember a few weeks ago when I was asking about the hull thickness? I got that all taken care of too, the thickness ended up being 1 1/4" thick, hull windows COMPLETE

Depending on where you get your oil. Personally I would run Merc's 25w-40 dino oil over any other companys synthetic. Merc does make their own synthetic as well, in the heavier weight. The problem with XYZ 10W30 Syn is that it tends to get a little to thin when very hot. It still protects fine, but you end up burning more of it compared to the heavier oil

Volvo Penta has a 30W synthetic but its hard to find in my area.

Hey Don,
You seem to be very knowledgable. I just got done dropping the new motor in her and attaching the outdrive, Now, I cant seem how to compress the trim cylinders to attach them to the outdrive,. Any helpfull tips? Its a alpha one outdrive.
Also, Could you possibly send me a link so I can download the manual #6 for the outdrive?

If you insist on sythetic after break in, try any diesel grade synthetic 20-50, or I think amsoil makes a 25-40.
I run straight 30w delo-400, most boat engines get so few hours on them that regular 30w is good for a season.
I would rather run non sythetic for a season and put new oil in in the fall, than run 2 years with the sythetic.

If the trim rams are extended it was not fully trimmed in when the drive was removed.
You can either lift the drive with a couple people lifting up on it or hook the battery up and try to trim it in with the switch.

.. boaters should follow the OEM guidlines (they do EXTENSIVE testing) and not listen to opinions.
