Another stupid human trick!<br />My 3 hp evinrude fell overboard. I was able to rescue it within 15 seconds, but it wouldn't run after that. I brought it home, set it on a makeshift test stand with a 2x8 and a garbage pail filled with water. I still get spark so the magneto/coil is OK. I replaced the oil/gas but must have water in the carb and cylinders.<br />What do I do now? I don't want to pull the carb if I can help it. Maybe a little dry gas.<br />Suggestions are welcome.

your going to have to pull the carb. it's the only thing that will get it out also hanging the motor upside down for a day helps too!

You need to get all water out of the carb ... dry gas is not the way to go AND you need to get the motor running pronto, especially if it was saltwater bath you gave it. I would shoot some WD40 or ATF into the cylinder(s) right away and get that little motor running.

You have first get the water out of the cylinders. Take out the spark plug and pull the motor over untill you get all the water out. You will have to put some oil or mystery oil in the cylinders so the bearings do not freeze up. Another thing was it dropped in salt or fesh water? Salt water will do a number on the motor if it is not taken care of right away. Secondly take the carb off and make sure it is not filled with water. Clean it thourly with carb cleaner. Make sure all the electrical conections on the motor are clean. Buy yourself some new spark plugs and try to start it. If you have spark it should start right up. But if the plugs are getting wet because there is still water in the cylinders you can pull it all day and it wont start. Have to have dry plugs. Good luck let me know how it all turns out!!

thanks for your advice, guys. I got the motor running again. It ran like a top before the mishap, but it runs poorly now. I have it set up in my make shift garbage pail tank. When I turn the throttle up, it stalls. I tried adjusting the red screw in and out, but to no avail. I was careful not to change the adjustment on the carb when I took it off the motor to dump the water/fuel. I dropped the motor in fresh water so salt is not an issue. Bringing it to a marina is my last resort.<br />Any more advice? I appreciate those who responded and so quickly.

There is not much more to do now. Im sure it has been a few days. I would run the motor with 25:1 oil mix maybe for 6 gallons to make sure the crank bearings are ok. Make sure the carb is still clean. After you do the 6 gallons of double mix put in new plugs the others will be fouled with oil. Good luck...... Or buy a used powerhead.... What year is it i might have one laying around!!!

How long did you run it? You want to get it hot enough to dry everything under the flywheel. It may straighten out with enough running time as S.T. suggested. I had this experience only once (hydro flipped) and the motor ran like crap for about 1/2 hr then ran well. At the time, I attributed to motor heat drying the points, etc.

Excuse for butting in but would you shoot the wd40 or atf in th eplug holes to lube the cylinders...I'm just trying to learn

Points (if it has points) could be wet, may dry with running, but, I would open it dry and clean them.<br /><br />Big_HE<br />Yes in the plug holes with piston near the bottom of the cylinder, though I would use atf only if wd40 is not around, atf was/is not ment to burn, it would not cause any problems other than it may foul the plug/s. also wd40 claims to displace moisture.<br /><br />Richard

I took an 84 3 horse for a swim once. I got it running again but it ran only run with the choke out. It turned out to be a blown head gasket.

750, it sounds like you still have water in the carburetor. Low speed jet draws fuel from the top of the floatbowl. As you roll on the throttle, it shifts over to the main jet, which is located in the bottom of the bowl....where the water lies.
