So what do ya think? The bad winterization, froze and cracked block theory is now sounding less likely. Think I cracked the previous block due to a failed impeller and overheat?

i do not think so. with a severe overheating you may end up blowing a headgasket or even seizing the engine, but unprobably cracking the block in exactly that area where freezing cracks are common.

never heard of an overheat where all ( gaskets, manifolds) looks fine but the block is cracked.

however- nice you found the fault , i hope your wife rewarded you next night for being so brave to even jump overboard and search the problem :D

Nice diagnosis of the water pump. . . that certainly took a bit of work. I agree with the other comments about heat probably not being the cause of a cracked block.

Nice looking engine and glad you got it fixed, but please take the fram filter off and put a respectable filter on.

Ah come on SB . . . is there really that much difference among brand name oil filters ? :)

On another forum I'm on, we are fortunate enough to have an oil expert who is paid to cut apart literally 100's of oil filters, and do continued analysis on new and used oils without bias. I have seen the cutaways..the material and construction of all the different filters, and also what particles (and the size of those particles) that made it through, etc. The Fram's are obviously one of the worst oil filters in existence. Its common for internal materials to come unglued and actually allow the oil to completely bypass the filter all together.. besides, friends don't let friends buy Fram. :D

Agreed....
Unless you are buying the big $ Frams, the traditional orange filters that everybody cut their teeth on have filter elements held together with cardboard, while most other makers are using good old fashioned steel caps. Yet Fram charges you the same price or more for a filter design that they clearly cut costs on, with no benefit to the consumer.

Ken

Glad you found the overheat problem. I had an identical overheating issue with one of my engines and it was also finally identified as an visually good impeller - but one where the center spline was not well attached to the rubber fingers. This was promoted as a "run dry" impeller by the manufacturer. It was intermittent when it failed but always resulted in a runaway temperature spike. I believe the manufacturer was GLOBE and they refused to address the failure and refund my costs for their failed impellers. I am now once again running VP impellers and have not overheating issues.
