Engine overheated light

I have a 1963 40hp lark. My Starcraft has an "engine overheated" light on the dash. I found when I got the boat the light was unhooked. I hooked it up and discovered that it stayed lit all the time and caused the engine to not throttle up. I looked all through the service manual I bought on the engine but didn't find anything on a sensor or limit switch pertaining to this light. I know the water pump is working and that the engine is not running hot. The light is on right from start up. My question is, where is the sensor and is it an avilable part.

The overheat sensor is on the cylinder head. I do not think it is connected to the ign system, but you might explore the wiring. Something might have been changed in the 45 years since it was new. Ignition should be magneto, with no interaction with the battery.
