Engine placement relative to transom?

Just bought boat past week, out of water for first time today.
At the house, I lowered the motor all the way and saw that it was not perpendicular to the back of the boat. Should it be?
There was a slight cant of the motor relative to the back of the boat.
Motor is a 88 SPL, boat is a 22 foot deckboat.

I'm only getting 4800 rpm out of it also, I know its a little low.

The anti cav plate was even with the bottom of the keel.

TIA

TPD...I think some of the guys already gave you some ideas on changing the prop to get the rpms up so you won't lug the engine. Recheck your previous threads on this.

Check the engine mount holes and make sure the same holes are used on both sides of the engine.

Keep us posted.

Re: Engine placement relative to transom?

OBJ,

Yes sir, I got the info on the prop, I'm gonna either raise the motor or buy a 11 pitch prop.

The question was about the position of the motor relative to the transom on the vertical axis.

The holes are the same on both sides of the boat.

Thanks for the reply, I have a lot to learn..

Hummm. Is one side of the engine up off the transom, is the transon not horizontal or are the mounting holes drilled crooked?

c/6
Hooty

Re: Engine placement relative to transom?

The engine is set or seated on the transom all the way, it is not crooked and the holes appear to be level or even.
The angle I'm talking about is the side view of the engine relative to the vertical plane of the back of the boat.
Should the engine be straight up & down along this vertical plane relative to the back of the boat?
I'll post a photo as to get opinions.

Re: Engine placement relative to transom?

No neccessarily TPD....the engine tucks in for "out of the hole" shots. Then using the TNT, if equipped, you trim the engine out for best on plane running. If the engine is not equipped with TNT (this, by the way, means trim and tilt) you can adjust the tilt rod on the bottom of the transom brackets for best on plane running. The rod holds the engine out away from the transom. You'll lose coming outta the hole but gain on top end. You'll have to try the rod in different holes to see what's best. This could also be a reason for your low rpms at WOT. Engine tucked in to far.

Re: Engine placement relative to transom?

The verticle plane from the side should be in relation to the keel of the boat, not the transom. the engine should trim down (IN) past 90 degs slightly.
Where is your cavitation plate in refrence to the bottom of the keel, (above, below, even...what?)

EDIT: Just read your post again....cav plate even with keel.

Nothing to be concerned about TPD. It does not have to line up with the transom when tucked all the way in. Some do, some don't. Depends on the angle of the transom and the motor. If you are asking what is the best angle for running, then follow the others advice on trimming out..

Re: Engine placement relative to transom?

Hey All,

Thanks, I got it now, great info you all posted.
It appears the motor is mounted to the transom correctly as to the horizontal and vertical planes of the keel.
One less thing to worry about.

Thanks :)
