Hey boating experts,

I have to consider myself a boating noob at 16 years old. I was heading out on the water yesterday morning, and then my motor wasnt starting, but the strater was working because i could hear it trying to kick in. I then took the top off my engine and realised that one of the caps of my spark plugs was a off a little bit. Therefore, i put it back on, assured that this was the problem.

Then, I enthusiastically turned my key, and i wasnt getting any power at all except for a little clicking sound everytime i turned the key. How disappointing after you wake up at 4am to head out on the water an hour away from your residence.

I looked at the motor tonight and the bendix looked a little jammed, therefore I lightly taped it with a hammer. It then seemed to go into place, so I turned my key and the motor started with ease.

Is this an unsual problem and what precautions should I be taking for the future. DOes this happen regularly?

Im just claryfing that i didnt hit the bendiz while turning the key, but i did them apart. I even tried the motor a few times and it was ok.

Thanks in advance for your help, it is much appreciated

Sounds like you need to clean up all of the connections of the battery to starter and block cables.

Take each connection off, clean it thoroughly (both ends) and reconnect.

Even the tiniest bit of corrosion can really screw up the current to the starter motor. Even the tightest and cleanest looking connection can get that tiny bit of corrosion.

Good luck. :)

Greetings from another 17 yo boater,
I assume by spark plug cap you mean the plug lead (wire) was off. This would most likely prevent the motor from starting, but has nothing to do with your starter issues.
As for the starter, when you say the bendix was jammed, do you mean it was still up and engaged to the flywheel?
If so, then lubricate the starter shaft and bendix and spring with WD-40 and move it up and down by hand several times.

As JB said, make sure your connections are tight and clean otherwise the motor might not be getting enough juice.
