I just bought a boat that had been sitting for about 10 years and the distributor and ignition module were taken from it. I cleaned the carb, bought a delco est ignition system for it, changed the oil, drained the fuel tank and put fresh gas in it, and changed the fuel filter. The carb is getting gas and I have spark but I cannot get it to start to time the motor. Is there anything I am missing?

Are you confident you've got the distributer adjusted close enough to start?

Take a rag and stuff it into #1 spark plug hole. Keep clicking engine over til the rag pops out. You can then rotate the crank a little bit more to put it at TDC. You rotor should point to #1 plug.

Re: Engine problems 5.7 mercruiser

I had an OMC 350 that did the same thing. If it doesnt end up being the dizzy being backwards, mine turned out I had multiple problems, but the biggest issue was the fact that no matter how hard I tried or how many times I drained it, I just couldnt get all the debris and water out of the tank. I could run it off a carry on fuel tank without issue. Of course that engine ended up having low compression anyway, so it didnt matter, but you might wanna try running it off a lawnmower gas can just to make sure you have eliminated the fuel as the culprit.
