hello all
I have a 20 ft. aqua sport here in Mexico, the motor is a 1998 175 hp johnson..the other day we were out about 10 miles fishing and the motor died..we pulled a plug and found we had no spark to the plugs..after trying everything we could think of..we started our little kicker and made our way slowly home. we checked all the obvious things them finally called in a mechanic (named pavo which in spanish means turkey..gee I hope that is not a bad omen!) anyway he did some checking and said no power was coming from the rotor and stator at the top of the engine..well you can imagine how hard it was to get that apart after 10 years of corrosion on the west coast of Mexico..he had to break the little plastic wheel on the very top which I assume is a rotor? not being a boat mechanic not sure of the names of all the parts to get at the main metal flywheel type rotor...when we finally got the rotor off we could see where the rotor and stator had come together and had ground off some of the corners of the rotor and parts of the stator were bubbled from overheating and there was oil under the stator...he said all this needed to be replaced.. and I would have to agree with him on that...what I would like to ask this forum is could somebody give me any advice on putting it back together once or if we get the parts..also any ideas why it happened and could it have been prevented?? and if the terminology for the names of the parts I have been talking about are right... I hate bothering people..but here in Mexico doing things of this nature are a little bit harder than usual and I need all the help I can get!!
thanks for any help you can give...oldgringo
