98 Force 120hp
- motor cranks ok - a little hard at times, but will crank
- will idle ok (a little rough), but stays running
- when given throttle, will get to about 2100 RPM and that is it. Will not go anymore. Won't even get to plane.
- When not in water (with earmuffs), engine will rev and reach max rpms (5300). Even if it is put into gear on the trailer (with earmuffs), it will reach max rpms.
Found the top carb air flow guard cracked and gummy grease just inside of top carb. Removed and cleaned with carb cleaner per instructions on can. Took out on water and same symptons.
When on the water and running, I can remove cover and manually engage throttle at engine (by using lever) and get TONS of white smoke. And it almost sounds like it is about to choke out but will engage and rev really high.
Did compression check and all 4 apear to be within 120-135 range.
Do I need a carb overhaul? How much does this cost if taken to the shop? If done myself? could it be as simple as the choke being stuck? How do I check this?
