Engine pull - what kind of lift?

How have you guys lifted your engines out before? I have a typical hoist for car engines but I seriously doubt it'd get high enough to clear the sides or back of the boat.

I have a friend with a pulley style hoist that'd work great, but if I could do this in my own garage or driveway I'd be happier.

last one i pulled out we used a boom truck. but if your buddy has a way to get it out go ahead and get it ready to pull at home and then trailer it over and take out the mount bolts and pull it

I pulled my 305 V8 out of Chris Craft on trailer with an engine hoist. It cleared with a couple of inches to spare. I was going to block up plywood or something to raise hoist if it didn't clear, but it didn't need it.

Fork lift! It's amazing how easy that makes things... Of course, fine adjustments can be tricky, cause those hydraulics move mighty quickly...

If you have a trailer, you could possibly rent an a-frame hoist from Ace Rents, or some place like that. It's just a big frame that looks like a swingset on wheels, with a chain hoist in the middle...

Come-along thrown over a strong limb, or a stout beam in a garage (if you've got any strong enough) will work too.

if you know anyone with a tow truck you can use the main boom or a some friends have used small tractor/back hoe. or like us cecil county boys a tree limb and a chain winch.. be careful.

I've removed a 3.0L from an 18' Sea Ray, 4.3L from 19' Century Mustang, and re-installed the 4.3L into the 18' Sea Ray all using a standard cherry picker engine hoist. To help things out if need be you can block up the front of the trailer to lower the back down as much as possible. You should be able to clear it.

Pulled a 140 mercruiser from a four winns with an automotive cherry picker.

Barely cleared the transom.

Was prepared to raise the front of the boat more to lower the rear.

Re: Engine pull - what kind of lift?

OK cool. I think I'll go the "swingset on wheels" route. My 17' sits really low on the trailer, won't tip up much, and all the trees around here are around 4' tall (new lot, new construction). My garage is new, so it's only built to hold itself up, nothing more.

I'll disconnect everything and take it to his place to yank it.

Thanks guys.

I got mine to go in and out with a standard automotive hoist... after I cranked the front of the boat up and let the air out of the tires...
