Hopefully these photos answer some questions. I put some photos of numbers that are on the spline drive for outdrive. As well as carb and a few pics of what I got. All the gaskets were redone and it appears to have been rebuilt.

another question I had was: is the 93 a pre vortec engine still or does this one have vortec heads? I'm not sure when they switched for marine.

I'd get an Edelbrock Marine carb. I have a Weber that came with my 350 Mag which is basically the same device.

Wasnt sure if you were implying you have a Weber for sale?
I've heard good things about edelbrock carbs. Another that was recommended to me was Carter!

Vortec heads appeared on the marine engines in 1996, so yours are not Vortec. Easy to change to them though. ;-)

The Edelbrock and Weber carbs are copies of the Carter AFB....

Thank you. If you don't mind, what is it that let's you know what kind of carb it takes? I also am wondering why there are 2 oil fill caps 1 on each valve cover?

Ayuh,..... It appears you've got what is probably the used core of a mid/ late-'80s vintage Chevy SBC,......

That's what such a " long block crate motor" looks like when it comes off the delivery truck,......
They're transplanted into countless SBC powered boats, trucks, 'n cars by the millions,.....

That motor appears to have the GM high rise cast iron intake, mid/ late '80s vintage, 'n the 1 pc. rear main seal, also mid// late '80s vintage,......

I'd slap a flywheel or flexplate, 'n starter on it, 'n do a compression test, just to see how AFU it is,......

The serial number plate came back as a 1993. Not sure if that matters.

I'm working on the starter and flywheel as we speak to do that exact thing :) :) :) I'll post results when I have them.

Guess it would of been easier to just post a photo of the gimbal to see what outdrive the boat is setup for and if usable! Here she is. Gen 1?

That is a later MC1 gimbal and bell housing. You can use any drive from 1966 to 1990... For the 350 engine, use a ratio of 1.5:1 (or 1.47:1 for later drives)... Unless you are installing in a particularly heavy/big boat, in which case you can use higher reductions.

Best carb for that engine would be an Edelbrock 1409. My second choice would be a Rochester Quadrajet. Steer clear of Holleys... (And I know I'm going to attract 'attention' because of that comment. Merc stopped using Holleys in the 70s. Ask yourself why.)

If your asking how we know it's a 4 barrel....

I also am wondering why there are 2 oil fill caps 1 on each valve cover?

Because there is only one valve cover made. They just put the same one on both heads. :D

Thanks for the ask about my carb, but we are not allowed to sell across this forum. And I am such a dumb packrat that I now have a complete 350 mag sans electrics which are in my 383 that I built.
One of these days I may find a boat that needs a motor. Or maybe I'll put the 350 back in the Formula when I am ready to part ways.
I advertised the engine for a while 2 years ago, but not too many were interested because I tried to get it's real value.

Ayuh,.... As I said, what you bought is only a Long Block motor,.....

It's all the accessories that get bolted to it that determine what drive it'll run with,.....

Right now, it'll run on any model of drive,.... MC-1, Alpha, Bravo, 'ell, an OMC or Volvo,.....

Would 3100 pound dry weight be considered heavy? It's a 23.5 for slickcraft. I just want to make sure I do everything right the first time. Thanks again Chris!

I think I got flagged for that. It's been a min since I've been on the site. I'm a little rusty lol. Are you allowed to point me in a direction of a company that has good prices on carb?

Awesome, very helpful gentlemen! Thanks for all responses. I'm searching for a drive now. Couple options have come up. 1000 for rebuilt or about 500 used around here. See what I come up with!

where is a good place to get carbs at? My standard go to is Ebay, is there a great priced marine part supplier like a rockauto for cars?

Now my mechanic is recommending I change out the housing and drive to a newer style for this engine. He said 84 or newer. Is this a good idea? Once the engine is out it wouldnt be anything to pull that and upgrade. Would that then be a gen 2? He kept calling it a "R" drive saying I'd be stuck in the 70s if I leave it and slap a drive on existing. So much to take in I tell ya
