hello hello, got forwarded here by some fellow fishermen, hope someone can help, here's the dilemma...

i have an 81 johnson evinrude 35hp OB, recently i was heading back to the launch after a day out on the lake and the engine start vibrating terribly, which in turn vibrated the hell out of my boat, i lowered the throttle and continued back to the launch, the engine never cut out or died..just vibrated very bad..

the following week i took it out and again it vibrated but this time i lost all motion, the prop stopped turning...so this is where i am

my guess is that the leg is shot, the transmission is gone or i ran out of gear oil...

any thoughts on this would be greatly appreciated, thank you

scott

Re: engine question...duh

Hi,Scott.
With the boat on the trailer, in neutral, engine off, rotate the prop by hand. Observve the propshaft. It should stay in the center. If not, the propshaft is bent.
Also note the condition of the prop itself. grab it,and see if you can get any 'wiggle'.
Now, stick in forward, and rotate the prop.It should click in one direction, and not go in the other. If it does, the hub has 'spun-out'. You will need to take it off and send it to a prop shop. For around 35buks, they will rehub and ballance it. I'm pretty sure this happened AFTER the intial problem.
Click on this link for "lower units 101". It should guide you thru basic lower unit inspection.
http://www.iboats.com/cgi-bin/ubb/ultimatebb.cgi?ubb=get_topic;f=17;t=011919
